You asked for a larger 'OEM+' turbo that could flow more intake air at higher RPM, where the stock turbo runs out of breath - and that's exactly what we got. This TD04 20T is MHI's high-performance bolt-on upgrade turbo for all BMW N20 engines. It has a forged billet CNC machined compressor wheel that flows 20% more than stock, allowing this turbo to make more power everywhere in the rpm range - without sacrificing spool. No compromise here, you'll see +20% power gains across the board from this plug-and-play solution. MHI is BMW's OE supplier for turbocharged engines, so you can expect the same OEM BMW factory quality.
The 58mm 20T billet compressor wheel (2618-T6511) utilizes MHI's latest generation blade aero. 7 primary blades and 7 splitter blades provide up to 32psi boost and a max flow rate of 40lb/min. The wastegate actuator is MHI's electronic actuator with a 20.5mm stroke. Now achieving cult status, this simple and stock-appearing turbo consistently outperforms many high-dollar setups in the 300+whp range.
This is a 100% bolt-on replacement, complete with the manifold, integrated turbo, as well as a new electronic wastegate assembly. It comes as pictured, and is the most complete and ready-to-install N20 Big Turbo on the market. And because this MHI turbo is manufactured new from the OE manufacturer, there is no core charge. This is not a rebuilt Frankenstein creation using recycled parts. And you're not getting half of a turbo or part of the package. You're not swapping the guts of your current stock turbo either.
The MHI N20 turbo upgrade is really a perfect upgrade for these engines. Increasing the boost with the stock turbo will quickly reveal its deficiencies, including over-speeding the turbo causing more heat and backpressure with not much more power - all while decreasing the life of the turbo. The larger MHI turbo allows more boost with less effort and reduced backpressure / EGT.

MHI went with a machined billet wheel instead of the stock cast piece for extra strength, lighter weight, quicker spool, and improved durability. The bigger turbo flows more air even at the stock PSI so it's not overworked and does not strain internal components. The MHI N20 turbo is the same twin-scroll design as the original turbo. This means lag is absent and the strong low-to-mid-range torque remains. We've found this turbo makes noticeable torque and horsepower gains even without adding more boost. If you're tuned for increased performance, the effects of this turbo are even more dramatic.
TECHNICAL NOTES
- Oil requirements: 5W30 minimum. Change the engine oil after a 1,000-mile turbo break-in period.
- Fitment on pre-2013 cars with pneumatic wastegate (PWG): your original PWG and actuator arm must be transferred to the new turbo housing. The wastegate pot is a simple bolt-on. The hole for the mounting pin on the PWG arm must be drilled out to 10mm. These are very simple modifications that should only take a few minutes to complete.
